From the beginning of the Web, there have been many trends in website design.
The first era started with an academic focus and was geared towards simple sharing of information.
Then we experienced a shift-to-the-design era, and the advent of more graphics.
That gave birth to the techno-hype era where both web-developers and their clients looked for new ways to stand out and get attention using the latest web gimmicks. -- There was a greater focus on the glitz and glam of applets, flash, and videos -- as opposed to actual content.

Today, we are in a stage of web-evolution where a good web experience is the result of mutual collaboration between presentation (visual design), interaction (response from users), and organization (site structure); currently thought of as the Usability-era. What was once considered a "cool" site is no longer as cool as we initially thought. Focus is now being placed on usability and user-participation.
A professional, custom website design creates a striking balance between the two extremes of “visual” and “information.” The goal is to blend together a unified piece of design where BOTH text and graphics enhance the readability and perception of the message being conveyed to a target audience.
